Waita, Katuku Partnership to Revive Coffee, Macadamia Farming in Machakos
Monday 25th April, 2022: Incoming Machakos Senator Hon. Mutua Katuku has promised to work with the administration of Governor Nzioka Waita towards providing subsidy and value addition which will be the remedy to revive and improve income for our coffee farmers.
Speaking in Kathiani and Kangundo areas of Machakos County during a meet the people campaign tour, the two frontrunners in the upcoming general elections led the people in reminiscing the days when farmers used to receive huge coffee bonuses from their harvests.
However several years down, coffee farming has dwindled due to low returns from their harvest.
Nzioka Waita who is a former statehouse chief-of-staff has promised that his administration will offer subsidised fertiliser and herbicides to all coffee farmers in the area as soon as his administration takes charge in August 2022.
He has also reiterated that he will look for alternative and better markets for the coffee produce.
"Our farmers have been exploited by bad brokers and markets. That will come to an end as soon as my administration comes in office", said Waita.
"Coffee farming is a very lucrative venture but only with the right markets and value addition factories in our area to avoid exploitation by exporters", he added.
Supporting Waita’s sentiments senatorial frontrunner Hon. John Mutua Katuku lamented the poor returns that coffee and macadamia farmers get even after hard work in their farming.
Katuku who is a former Water and finance minister under former president the late Mwai Kibaki promised to lobby for building of value addition factories with additional funding from the National Government.
"It is time we had coffee and macadamia exported from Machakos county. We want our products christened Made in Machakos. We want our farmers to get value for their hard work", he said.
